On the 18th of April 2010 it was the first time that I actually sat behind the steering wheel in a car. As all of my friends can imagine, I was extremely nervous and some people even said, "I'm glad that I kept off the road while you were learning how to drive!"
My birthday was on the 3rd of February although I didn't go for my L plates until the 9th of April as both of my parents work and although mum doesn't work on a Friday, of course she had better things to do rather than getting her daughter's drivers' licence! Nah, only joking, gotta' love her!:) I also did have things happening on a Friday so it's not just her fault, I suppose, he he, so that's why on the first Friday of the term 1 holidays, I went and did the computer test at the Willagee Licensing Centre and only just passed as my mark was 25/30!
When my dad and I drove into Murdoch University car park, me being me got the shakes but finally got over them and sat in the front seat. The first thing Dad told me to do was put my seat belt on, check my rear vision mirror and side mirrors, put the gear stick in neutral and have my foot on the clutch, and then turn the key in the ignition but before I could do that, of course I had to ask 20 questions! "Will the car start to move?!" "Will I go too fast?!" "What if I stall it?!" I turned the key in the ignition and started up the car. I left the gear in neutral and Dad told me to put my foot on the accelerator to get a feel for it, so I pushed my foot down and "BROOOOOOOOOOM!" I looked at Dad, who was laughing, as if to say, "Yeah, thanks for warning me!" Finally after about 3 times of stalling it, I managed to go from neutral to first gear and I was able to drive around the car park! I was extremely excited!:) As we reached a stop sign, Dad told me to start slowing down but instead of slowing down, I just slammed my foot down on the brake and I just about gave us both whip lash although it did give us something to laugh about! In the end, I probably stalled it more than I actually got the car moving although I actually managed to go from first gear to second gear all by myself! Practice does make perfect and hopefully by the end of the 24 days, I'll be comfortably driving a manual!:)

Have you tried parking a manual car yet? i cant do it without going to fast into the parking bay or going to slow and stalling :S
ReplyDeleteA good story Tayla :)
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, we all did a few stalls and bunny-hops when we were learning to drive. It's good that you're aiming high and learning the manual rather than just automatic!
Keep us updated and drive safe :)
